It would be nice to see the different ways to sync external keyboards, sound modules with reaper. I’m trying to understand the master and slave in reaper!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Could you be more specific? are you talking about purely MIDI… So send from the keyboard to Reaper then Reaper plays back to the module to trigger sounds which then once again go back into reaper as audio? I unfortunately do not have a MIDI keyboard at the moment and external module, I’m using everything IN the box. I’ll ask some friends to see if i can get the correct instructions for this sort of thing and get something setup for you.. Or I may be able to borrow some gear to get this tutorial done for you.

    • Pier1  says:

I could really use some help on this also. I have a Presonus FireStudio Mobile FireWire Audio Interface and a Yamaha S80 keyboard. I hooked up the midi I/O and the outs from the Keyboard to the ins of the box. I can’t figure out how to get Reaper to recognize my keyboard. Do I need to delete the preferences in Reaper and re-start to let it find it?

      • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I would assume you could put the input on the Reaper channel to “all midi sources” to get it to work.. but i guess that isn’t the case.. does your FireStudio driver utility see the midi device?

        • Pier1  says:

Sorry it took me so long to get back. Yes, if I put turn the local ON, then I can hear my keyboard through the Firestudio Mobile. I followed some directions I found and created 1 midi track w/IN & OUT MIDI selected and then 1 audio track with the INs of the keyboard into the card selected and the OUT (monitors) selected. I could hear it and record it IF my keyboard was in local ON mode. I thought I was supposed to be able to hear it through the audio track and record midi notes that can be edited through the MIDI track???

          • Pier1  says:

As a follow-up: it turned out that my MIDI breakout cable from the audio interface was bad (they are sending a new one). I set it up with a different MIDI interface and it works as it should. So it’s all a matter of routing. Thanks for your response earlier.

  • caspa1  says:

What would be fantastic is a tutorial on how to route plugins and setup for live recording, including analytical plugins e.g. gfxanalyser so they can display in real time. Also using a third party plugin – where to store and how they are displayed. Anything you can do to help us out here would be great. Regards, Chris

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Sounds good, I’ll make a tutorial on how to setup a live mix, with 16 channels to record with at a time, light effects, GFXAnalyser on the Main mix and 3 headphones mixes (for if you have an interface with 8 outs(main + 3 pairs). Not sure what you mean about “using a third party plugin – where to store and how they are displayed”… I might have covered that already in one of my videos. Maybe you are talking about where to put free VSTs plugins. and where they show up in Reaper… I can do that on a separate video. Thanks for the Ideas! I’ll get on them ASAP!

    • Andrew Stott  says:

Yes if you could show how to install and run VSTs that would be very very helpful for some of us newbies.

  • kundalinguist  says:

Hey Jonny. One thing that is confusing to many people, and often remains to me when it’s not working right, is VSTi multiple track output routing ie. Kontakt 4 with instruments triggered on separate MIDI channels while being fed on separate audio channels via the output of the VSTi.

Perhaps you have an approach to this that can be understood and utilized by everyone. I know some rough videos have been made of this, but your production style is definitely more elegant and “Reaper 2010.”

Thanks again for your hard work. :)

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’ll see what I can do. I have another video to do with MIDI as well. Maybe i can tie them both together. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe you can contact me on AIM or Skype to ensure certain things are discussed.

  • Confor_MIDI  says:

I think it would be nice if you could do a video on click tracks and how they are used in an everyday project.

  • Chris  says:

    Hi Jonny,
Thanks for everything, it has really been a help.
I was hoping you may be able to do a tutorial on the ReaTune (Reaper’s version of AutoTune). I’ve spent some time with it, but am still struggling and think it may be a valuable tool to see in action.
    Thanks Again!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Good idea! I’ll do some brushing up on ReaTune and see what i can do for you. Thanks for the request.

      • Chris  says:

Great, I look forward to it!
        Thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Its been awhile since I’ve done any tutorials for the website… I’ll make a video on how to use basics of ReaTune soon.

      • roger  says:

many thanks – i’ll look forward to seeing it. pitch corr was one of the two reasons i’m evaluating REAPER. i haven’t had very much luck trying to go it on my own.

        roger

  • kundalinguist  says:

Hey Jonny. I was messing with beat detection today (Measure from time selection – detect tempo stuff). How about a tutorial that shows an automated or quick way to grab the tempo from a live performance, split it and even quantize it and sync it up to tempo changes in the chorus, etc.?

It would incorporate some of what you’ve done with some drum splitting demos but use automated transient detection, be more in depth, and make use of tempo changes.

    Whattaya think?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hey, This would be a great idea.. the only issue with how reaper does this is that it doesn’t have a Strength feature for Audio quantizing… If i can find a way to do this that won’t sound like crud I will.. or else I’ll have to wait till Reaper has the same quantizing features on Audio as it does on Midi.

What i could do is show you how to use your recorded drum parts to record a Midi version of your drums..Quantize THAT, then make samples out of your Recorded Drums… and then bounce it back… BUT, that might take as long as manually editing the drum track.

Either way, The Tempo Detection is pretty cool.. I’ve used it on Live tracks before to manually edit them. I’ll see what I can come up with. Contact me on Skype and maybe we can chat. my name on there is RSRecords

  • rebitmusic  says:

Hello, can you explain how to make or load a drum map ?
For example, i have a alesis dm5 module, and i want to use addictive drums, but some default mappins are wrong, when i beat the kick , i hear the snare for example… How to fix that ?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I do not have an external drum mapper but i could see what i can do to make EZ drums and Addictive Drums use the same midi input triggers… thats would get you in the right directions… Although that might be more of a Non-Reaper issue.

    • RvTx  says:

Change mapping in ur module or in ADD, i use alesis trigger|io to fit ADD default preset. To change in ADD go to “?” in menu, and select map window. There u can see lots of presets and also do your own. Good luck!

      Cheers.

  • Abbe  says:

Hello, I saw a few videos and I find this software to be the most complete software and sequencer of all times!

And I was wondering if you can make a video giving advices and a few tips of how to make post-production with Addictive drums for example, perhaps maybe guitar rig 4 or TH1,

For example, once somebody its already finished with his whole song, now how he can do it sound profesional? like giving life or ambience to the drums, making the guitars sound very wide, you know… Advices for a better post-production and mixing. Im interested in all the tools of reaper.

    Thank you.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

This all comes from a lot of experimenting and experience… I might be able to put one of these up soon.. But I’m working on a few things at the moment so its been hard to get videos up for now.

  • Joey Joe Joe Shabbadoo  says:

I know this is crazy, but how ’bout a quick tutorial on how you record your tutorials? I’m pretty much a Reaper noob, but I’m interested on making a couple of quick videos for the community as well, but I don’t have any idea how to record my screen.

Anyway, thanks for your videos — they’ve helped me tremendously!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Camtasia – Record the Screen
Sony Vegas – Record Audio and then Sync video to audio.

I’m not going to do a video on this since I want this to be about Reaper mostly :-) . but hopefully those programs will help you out.

  • Tommy Tone  says:

A tutorial with Reaper and Behringer BFC2000 midi control surface?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

The only problem with that… is that I don’t have one. :-( Or else I would be able to do it. If I acquire one in the future I will post a video on it for you. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Well John first of all do you have a Email id so that I can contact you. As far as my request for a tutorial is concerned I just wanna know some editing techniques.

For eg I have recorded a Vocal in Reaper and in some parts of my song my Vocal level is low and some parts very high. I obviously need to add compressor but along with that I need to adjust volume levels of individual parts by selecting it. A tutorial on it would be awesome.

My second request would be if you can overall have a complete Tutorial on Editing as overall editing is kind of difficult in Reaper to understand.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Sounds like a god idea.. I’ll try to get something up for basic use of Reaper plugins. Thanks for the suggestion!

      • Tommy Tone  says:

Where are you ? I’ll loan you mine so you can make a video because I still haven’t figured mine out.

      • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Thanks John you at least got some ideas for your next tutorial video. That vocal example something where i am stuck to equal the levels by adjusting volume and stuff.

And with no straight forward Editing Tools and Modes its kind of different procedure in Reaper.

  • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Well Johnny I have another request as far as the tutorial is concerned on Reaper. Which would really help.

If you can do a tutorial on how to Route Multi I/O instruments in Reaper with Kore 2.

below link shows hows this done in FL studio :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSGjGH28Rto

wanna do the same in Reaper.

  • Silvano  says:

I hope you can make a tutorial about this particular affect
    http://www.primeloops.com/index.php?page=displayVid&videoID=8

Its called the reversed vocal effect

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Thanks for the request!

I’ll check it out and see what i can do.

  • Massimo  says:

I’m a newbie (registered user) and have multi timbral plug ins such as Kontakt. I do not know how to make 16 tracks and play them through the Kontakt instance and its 16 MIDI channels.
Definitely I want to avoid to have 16 different instances in order not to waste the CPU power.
I do apologize if it’s a silly question, but I think this matter it’s not clear.
    Thaks for any co-operation.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

There is a video about this currently on the site.

  • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Hi Jonny, I have a request apart from the one mentioned above is about “Tempo Mapping” mostly for the Drums and
alot of people are having this issue and a tutorial on it would be good.

  • Raiden  says:

    Hi,

If at all possible I would like to see a tutorial on how to use Reaper for playing VSTi instruments with the audio being recorded into Propellerheads Record v1.5

    Many Thanks

  • Eric  says:

Hey Jonny, great tutorials man. I especially found the one on the take system helpful….

however in that case you were choosing the best vocal take from different parts, from just one track. Could you possibly do a tutorial where you do the same thing except with drums on many tracks (OH’s, kick, Snare etc). I just don’t know how you would choose all the best drum sections from various tracks all the while keeping everything in sync. (because if you chose a certain kick drum track, if you chose a different OH track it might be off in certain parts etc as in they might not match up.

i hope you understand what im tryna say,

that would be great man, thanks again!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Well… I don’t think you would want to do that. The drum set should be treated as 1 instrument. Usually when I’m tracking drums I have them play it to the best of there ability and then I edit it to make it perfect. You might want to try finding the best overall take.. and then watch the Slip Editing video and learn to manually edit drums. Might aswell learn what the Pro’s do early :-) .

      • Eric  says:

ok cool, that makes sense. cheers man

  • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Hi Jonny recently i did this Mix using Reaper and realized that I need to create a Headphone Mix. If you could just help us out with a video as to how can we Route I/O for a Headphone Mix?

  • Silvano Haynes  says:

    Hey dude
    Great site!
I was wondering could you make a DVD tutorial about mixing a pop song or a Hiphop song & how to use some of the most common effects in those genres like Autotune, Hiphop stuttering effect, Low pitch voice etc.

  • Trevor  says:

Is there a way to use the computer’s sound card speakers as a reference monitor while recording using a usb interface?

I’m using a Tascam US-122MKII interface, and all it’s allowing me for playback is the l&r outputs on the interface itself. I’d like to use the interface as the input source and the computer’s speakers as the output if possible.

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

Jonny, I’m not sure if other or parts of other tutorials answer this, but I’m trying to manually do automations for various VSTi’s. Haven’t found the CC area yet, and the manual is not too detailed with regard to manual automation, (more along the lines of working with hardware, which I’m not doing).

    Thanks

  • Dean  says:

I got a set of “Legacy DD506″ electronic drumkit, how do I hook it up and get it going?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

It looks like that unit has a USB out, so to translate the MIDI to your computer you should be able to connect the USB port to the computer via a USB A-B cable. Then in Reaper under MIDI channels, the drum set MIDI port should show up(as long as the unit is set to send MIDI down the USB port).

To record audio to Reaper you would need an audio interface that has 2 1/4inch inputs to take the stereo out from the Legact DD506.

disclaimer: I don’t have this unit, but generally you would hook them up to the PC via USB and then use a VSTi plugin like “addictive drums” or “EZ Drummer” to make sound. :-)

      E-mail me for more info.

  • Heiko Sasgen  says:

    Hi John,

thx for your good work. Really helps a lot It would be very cool to have a tutorial for the new reaper MIDI quantize. Can’t understand it. MIDI in general and CC controls would be cool, too.

    Heiko

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

After the release of “Real World Recording With Reaper” I will be putting out a full MIDI production DVD.

I will try to put out a quick video on basic quantize functions for you soon though.

      Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Martin  says:

    Hi!

I would like to see a simple way of how to save and share projects for online collaborations. A simple way to save my project and all it files so that I can upload to it to a FTP server or email them. My friend should then be able to download it, add a guitar track, save and send an updated version back to me. And so forth.

Great tutorials by the way! Keep up the good work!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Sounds like a good idea!

I’m thinking as for sending over the internet just to add tracks… you should render your session from 0 as an MP3… then import it in to the session for the guitarist to play along with. Then when he send sends you back his session you just import the tracks.

That my not be what you are looking for though.. I’ll think of what to do for you.

  • Dean  says:

Awesome, works well with “Cakewalk”…..but now I got “Addictive drums”,only problem is that the hi-hats trigger as cymbals as well as the toms triggering as cymbals?….the snare and kick drum are ok,also the ride sounds as the hi-hats.
I’ve followed the protocol, bust most forums seem to designate a problem.maybe because the “Legacy” are more generic.Could I possibly tweek anything?

  • SimonCH  says:

Hi, I would like to see how and what folder to back up in case I need to format my computer. I want to keep all .wav files so I can later edit my songs as if nothing changed in my computer. Thanks :D

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Hmm.. this could be cool.

I usually put all my sessions in 1 folder on a separate drive.. i you havent done that it will be in a “Reaper Media” folder. BUT… you could always open your session files and go to
File > Save Project AS > and then browse to a folder on your backup drive “Recording Sessions” maybe? > Check the boxes at the bottom of the window “Copy Media files”, “Create Directory” > Name the session/song.

This will save your session file to the new location, and copy all the media files inside that folder(which will be named the same way as the session files .RPP.

I’ll make a video on this soon.

      Thanks for the idea!

      Jonny Ginese

      • SimonCH  says:

Yeah!! Thanks, looks easy, but I did’nt think about saving as :) :) Very fast awnser ++++

        • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

No problem man… you could always call if you need help too.. :-)

  • CalebEscape180  says:

Do you think you would be able to do a tutorial on buffer settings? I’m not sure exactly what to set my buffer settings and stuff for. I’m running like 30 tracks with quite a lot of effects on a Presonus Firestudio Project 10×10. The problem I have is that it starts freezing up and doesn’t play. I’m not sure what the problem is. But I think it has to do with my buffer settings.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Yeah. if you are in the mixing phase you should put your buffer up to ~1024 to allow our system to have more processes out. If you still have issues you might need a faster PC(but i doubt that). Check out the ASIO4ALL video. I go over buffer size and what it means. I don’t have a FP 10×10 so i can’t do a video on that unit.

      • Caleb  says:

Thanks. I’ve been using the ASIO driver for low latency applications, but for some reason it doesn’t work very for high latency. When I’m mixing I switch to WDM Kernel Streaming and it works pretty well.

  • Torbjorn  says:

    Hi,
I just bought the tutorial download version and it’s awesome! I love the simplicity of Reaper and you really show how to get the best out of the program.

I have a question. I’m doing all the tracking at our rehearsal room and edit/mix it in my home studio (I bring all files on a USB-drive). Is there a way to easily save the project and all its associated files in one command so I can open it up at my studio-PC? Or do I need to render all tracks to seperate files, as I do now, and save to my USB-drive?

Thanks! You’re doing a great job!
    /Torbjorn

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… try recording un the folder on the usb drive.. then open the session at the studio.

Thanks for the kind words about the tutorials!

  • AndyC  says:

After watching your tutorial video about Customized Menus and menu alterations i was blown away at the thought of getting Reaper set up just how i want it to be.

The thing that scares me though is the thought of me spending hour upon hour getting things set up the way i like it and then one day having the hard drive go bad or needing to do a fresh OS install and losing all my custom settings.

So i would like to request a tutorial showing the best way to back things up in Reaper (if it’s possible?)

    Thanks Andy

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Awesome request!!!

      I’ll get to this ASAP!

  • Steve  says:

I’m fairly new to using this program and switched from using FL Studio/Mixcraft. Could you show a simple demonstration of how to get a nice sound from vocals through a compressor? I’m having trouble figuring out using the ReaComp.. and any other tips. Thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Hey Steve!

Thanks for the post and for watching. The purchase DVD/DL goes through mixing and includes presets for vocals and other instruments.. But.

ReaComp starts out completely bare(not effecting anything.
You need to consider the sound you want to get.
Then use the Ratio, Threshold, Attack, Release, ect to obtain that.

Ratio: 2:1 means for every 2db in 1 db of volume is allowed. 5:1 – 5db to 1 allowed.
Threshold: At which level does the compressor start to React.
Attack: how long before the compressor reacts once the level is past the Thrshold
Release: How long it takes for the compressor to return to an un-effected state.

      Hope that helps.

      Jonny Ginese

Like i said above. The “Real World Recording With Reaper” DVD/DL might be a good option for you. It brings you all the way through a song production all done with Audio.

  • Jim  says:

I wonder, is there a way to create something similar to FL Studio automation clips for patterns and other such things?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Not sure what that is… could explain what these “clips” would be?

    • Vadym  says:

Hi! I’ll try to explain how to get automation like it was in FL.
Imagine that you have Sylenth1 and want to make a cutoff curve for your bass. It was very easy in FL, you just needed to right click on the knob and select Create an automation curve. In REAPER you cannot do this, but you can try to press Track envelopes/automation button and it will open a big list of parameters you can tweak. Just select “Filter A Cutoff” or “Filter B Cutoff” and a new track will creates just below your current track. This is your curve and you can draw whatever you want! Enjoy. Questions?

      • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Ahh.. and for simple Volume automations in Reaper you can Right click the ENV button, Select “Touch” press play and move the fader while the session is playing. Once done right click ENV and put it back to Read or Trim/Read.

  • Rosslava  says:

I would Like to see a video explaining techniques on creatng distance in your mix using panning and delay etc. Basically how to seperate intruments in the mix and getting them to “sit” properly within the mix. Thanks you guys are a huge help.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’ll do a little research and see which is the best way to explain/show this… This would be more of a video on Mixing and not Reaper though…

  • MiiDi  says:

Hey, i’m wondering if you can make a house beat tutorial? Thx ;)

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’ll keep it in mind! I’m trying to get some sponsors for samplers to do this type of tutorial.

  • TheSoftDistortion  says:

Could you do a tutorial on making Loop-based music using Reaper? I make mostly instrumental hip-hop beats and electronic music. I saw a tutorial somewhere about using reapers takes for making loop based music, but I didn’t really understand it. And I’m not sure if this is the best way to make loop basic music with reaper. And when I say loop based I mean both Audio and Midi loops…

    Thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’ll be working on my next DVD soon whiCh will be all about this. Maybe I’ll to a “teaser” video that will show you th very basics of starting this sort of production soon.

  • Quest The Wordsmith  says:

I use Sony Acid Pro. It’s built around loops, and being a Hip-Hop producer, loops are my bread & butter. I’d love to see a “migration” tutorial (“making the change from Acid to Reaper”) that smooths the transition from one daw to another. But more specifically, a good tutorial on how to use loops properly in Reaper. Set loop key notes, set tempo project based on loop tempo, have loops keep their pitch when tempo changes, how to insert a loop file as a one-shot, etc. Thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm.. this sounds great!.. the only issue is that I don’t know Sony Acid… But setting Reaper up to use a loops folder and such would make a great video.. I’ll look into it!

  • Jonathan  says:

    Hey Johnny,

Awesome site! Awesome vids! I learn a lot.

I was wondering if you could make a tutorial about Reaper Plugins. Just a basic overview or what not.

    Thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I have plans for this exact idea! Keep an eye out :-)

  • jico27  says:

    Hello,

I’d be glad to get a video about how to have Reaper (master) rewired with Ableton Live’s drum module (slave), starting from scratch.

    Many thanks

    jico27

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… Is that a VST that they give you or is it kinda like Reason where its built in ONLY to Live? Is there a trail of Live? if so I’ll DL it and check this out.

  • Michael  says:

    Hej,
I recorded a track where the bass is dominating the whole mix and I dont want it to fight with the kickdrum for bass frequencies, but when i apply eq on it gets burried completly, so I would appreciate a tutorial about mixing basslines with kickdrumhits. Creating a sidechains whichs cuts the bass when the kickdrums plays.

  • Vadym  says:

Hey! First I’d like to THANK YOU a lot for doing this! You got the best REAPER tuts I’ve ever seen!

I know something (not a lot of) about music creation with FL, Abbleton and Cubase, but I’d like to dominate REAPER. I like it most of all and I’d like to get things done as I did them before.

At first, I got problem using sampler. In FL you just insert new sampler, open a new kick/snare/clap sound you want in there and draw triggers (notes) on the piano roll. And it sounds just like it sounds in the player (WMP or in FL browser)! Here in REAPER there are more posibilities for ReaSamplOmatics5000 (what a name). At first I look for the right sound using a browser in REAPER (Explorer). And I hear what I want — it’s COOL! So I insert it in the ReaSamplOmatics5000 (I’ll call it RSampler in the future) and change its Mode to Sample (ignore MIDI items) and then I draw some C3 notes, for instance. It sounds not the same way it did before. It’s because of Atack and Release levels, I should change Atack to 0 and release to about 20 ms. And mostly it’s good, but not always. I’d like to have a posibility to use FL’s sampler, but REAPER’s one seems very nice. Can you explain, plz, how to use it in my case for creating my own drumtracks based on *.wav files?

    Thanx in advance!

  • tom  says:

how do you do simple recording edits?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hello Tom, Well the Overview video should show you some of that.

The Mouse will change cursors dependent on your locations over the Media Item. IE Left edge is Trim, Right edge is Trim, Top Left corner is Fade in, Top Right Corner is Fade out, and so on.

If you are coming form Pro Tools or are trying to use an “Area Select” type tool where you can highlight and press delete… It doesn’t exist in Reaper unless you make a custom macro. If you had a long piece of audio like a TOM on a drum set you would need to left click after the area you want to keep(which will put the edit cursor there) and then press “S” which will slice > Then do the same at the end of the area that you don’t want to keep and press “S” to slice > then left click the unwanted area and press delete.

It isn’t as hard as it sounds… I have a hover over macro so i don’t have to click the before and after slice points to make it a little easier.

    Hi Johnny,

I’m hooking up a Digi 002 rack with Reaper. Can’t seem to get the midi input to work. I’m also getting an error message “The following midi inputs could not be opened”. Have you covered this in another tutorial already? I’ll keep messing around with this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for working with Pro Tools hardware on a Mac?

    thanks
    Tim

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I have a Digi 002r as well that i use with Reaper… But I haven’t used it with Midi inputs yet. The only time i used a Midi keyboard was when I had an Axiom 25 which had a USB connector for its MIDI.

      I haven’t don’t a tutorial on this yet since I don’t have the hardware :-(

I could always do some remote support for you to help you get your Keyboard working. Just give me a call or e-mail sometime.

      • tbmusic  says:

I ended up getting it to work. I know it wasn’t complicated, but at the time I don’t remember what it was that I did. Maybe I’ll retrace my steps, and post it up here for you.

  • Myckel  says:

Could you tell us about how to use consolidate/export tracks in Reaper file menu?

    Thank´s

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Sure, I’ll make a quick video on that soon.

  • RockFer  says:

It would be nice to see a tutorial setting up reaninjam. Thanks for all the knowledge you provided. Also your dvd’s need a greater explanation and details on its contents.

    All in all great job!

  • Myckel  says:

I agree with rockfer, would be nice to see a tutorial setting up reaninjam. Thanks for the tutorials you provided.

    Great job!

  • Heli  says:

Can i change select track by a click of mouse to hot key on keyboard? If it can do, which hot key? Becuz i want to play live with reaper but now i don’t have a midi controller, so i want use my laptop to play live. I mean i’ll insert some tracks with another virtual intrusments, then play by virtual piano in reaper, when i select other track then sound (or FX) will change, but it is so hard to select other track by mouse. Can i use a hotkey to change other track when i still play on virtual piano? Pls support me, thank a lot

i would like to ask some questions. after i installed Kontakt Routing. when i open, it opens, but the problem is there are not any sound. and i would like to know that how can i put the sound on it?

    thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

did you just install the Kontakt Player?

  • gregory gumpas  says:

could you make a video showing how to set up a midi controller (knobs sliders etc) in reaper??
i want to be able to use my midi keyboard for various effects and knobs and tracks like i am able to in ABLEton
    thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Great idea! I’m going to try to borrow a controller from a friend so i can make a video about this.

  • doug  says:

Will you create another reatune video that shows how to get those common pop song robotic voice sounds?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’ll have to try to make ReaTune make that sound… in my experience its not that kinda tuner. But I’ll try some of the other filters to get that “T-Pain” sound.

  • Marcelo  says:

    Good Evening Johnny,
would be very very helpful to me if you could make a tutorial teaching how to sync my guitar track to a backing track.
    The scenario is:
i have a backing track of a Song and i want to record the guitar base and the guitar solo. But my guitar base is not precisely sync with the beat of the backingtrack. And i don’t know the BPM of the backing track… and slice/move every beat of my guitar is SO DAMN Hard =( help me please!

  • Ozlo  says:

thanks earlier, I had difficulty to change the tempo in an audio format(.wave),,, please help

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Are you trying to pull in an audio file at Tempo X and match it to a song at Tempo XX?

Is the file just a small piece of the song? Like 4 bars? or is it the entire song?

  • Woody Aki  says:

    Hi!

Just been poring through your tutorials endlessly prior to receiving my new PC, so I can hit Reaper running as smoothly as possible.

In all honesty, I’ll be using Reaper initially for mixdown and mastering puropses, as I’ll still be sketching my tracks into Ableton Live for the time being. With that said, it would be great if you can give us a tutorial where you can show us how to create a template or templates of, say, 24 tracks, 8 busses, and your take on FX management of these busses, etc.

I don’t know whether you get what I’m trying to picture here, but if you need more details, feel free to drop me a line.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

This sounds like a great idea. I have a project coming up where I will need to make Mix templates for Drums… So i could show how this is done and why.

As far as making a 24 channel template with 8 busses. I have the “Live Multi-Track” video which shows how to make all the channels. Is that not what you want? Or are you talking about making something like “Classic Rock 24 channels 8 Buss” and then having like Drums, Bass, GTR 1, GTR 1 Dub, GTR 2, GTR 2 Dub, GTR Lead, Vocals, Harmies… Then Buss’s for all the different reverbs, Delays and Paralleled compression?

E-mail me some more please. :-)

      • Woody Aki  says:

Close…I’m talking mix templates for electronic/dance music. Mostly interested in drum busses, the odd non-synth sound (bass guitar is what I have in mind), busses for reverb/delay/compression, suggestions on what to feed the master buss (tape sims, etc.)

        Hope this helps…

      • Woody Aki  says:

Hi again. The “Live Multi-Track” video really helped with about 60% of my queries. I’d like to see more in a tutorial that’s electronic/dance music based, but still, that was useful.

        Thanks again!

  • Christian  says:

I’m a new and excited Reaper user (coming over from DP). I would like to use Reaper for MIDI step sequencing (aka step recording) via my external MIDI keyboard controller. I’ve found that the language of one DAW is not necessarily used by another, so perhaps I should explain that I would like to record notes onto a MIDI track of a pre-determined value (eight note, or quarter note, etc.) and duration (75%, or 45%, etc.) from my MIDI keyboard controller, along with whatever controller information was naturally performed (note velocity, etc.). I am able to access the Piano Roll window in a MIDI track, but I am unable to input notes, or assign notes values, not to mention the ability to edit them afterward. Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

    Thank you, Christian

  • Alex  says:

    Dear Jonny,
It would be nice if you could make a tutorial about new “Groove tool” SWS feature.
    Thanks,
    Alex.

  • Michael John  says:

Hey man, love your tutorial video’s. Kinda new to reaper and your videos really helped me out. Could you do a video tutorial on parallel compression? Thank you.

    Michael

  • Jordan  says:

can you set up a tutorial explaining on how to set up a live loop? So each song will have a metronome routing ONLY to the headphone outs and the samples/808 drops and any other live samples will be sent to the main outs/headphone mix

This way a drummer can play live to a click track and live samples and any other programmed effects come in on time

    • Naal  says:

I second this. This is what I want to know. And is there a way to hook up a midi keyboard to play specific loop sections, i.e. make a session and have section 1, section 2, section 3, and if we’re playing a song that goes from section 1 to section 3, or we decide to play section 2 twice, I can controll that from a keyboard or MIDI pad or something?

  • Howard Rabach  says:

I would love to see a tutorial on how to have Reaper work with my current audio interface (Digi 002 mixing board). Though I use other preamps, I’d hate to just get rid of the interface altogether as I like the motorized faders and the layout. Thanks in advance for any ideas you can provide!

  • AL Bowles  says:

Hi , I’m still pretty new to all this stuff. I have a drummer in a different town who records his drum track to mp3 and then sends it to me. When I import it into reaper I can’t seem to make all the beats fit the grid. Therefore the metronome is useless too as nothing seems to sync up. Could you help me please.
    Many thanks
    Al.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

you need to make sure he renders all his tracks from 0:0:00 and that he gives you either the BPM or a MIDI file with BPM changes (if the BPM changes in the song)

      • AL Bowles  says:

Ok Thanks , i’ll do that . Thanks for your help.

  • bhooks  says:

Jonny, I have looked at the thread in the forum on tempo mapping and I just don’t get what they are talking about.
most of my recordings involve people that just aren’t used to performing with a metronome. so being able to tempo map would help a lot. So how about a video on this for reaper 4

  • Nick  says:

I would like a total mix from start to end of a song. meaning im not trying to make a beat. im want to make a song for the raido. vocals an a track. im rap so if u could do one of those 4 me thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

The upcoming MIDI DVD will cover creating a beat for 3 different genre’s and Creating/Mixing a Hook for the song. Keep an eye out for that. I’m not going to put a full length Mixing video online for any genre… Those will be reserved for DVDs.

  • Naal  says:

I’m just getting into Reaper and LOVE it. Such a step up from my other DAWs. Which shall remain unnamed.

I’m still new to the whole plug-ins thing and getting them to work in Reaper. More than just, like, a reverb rack or something. I’m talking like, analog synth patches or drum machines… I’m not sure how to set those up in Reaper.

Also, I’m going to start using this live. I think a video of live applications would be sweet!

  • Cole Laslo  says:

Hey I am new to reaper and I was wondering how I could record sounds off my mircokorg without it acting as a midi controller?
I currently have a Tascam US-800 8 Input USB 2.0 Computer Audio Interface, and I was also wondering if you could show me the necessary connections with cords via picture or video?

  • SteelBoots  says:

HI, OK i’m pretty sure i’m doing something really wrong…but….in the event i’m not I’ll put this out there. I have a yamaha digital kb that is USB connected to my computer (64 bit Win7)…and I downloaded Reaper, already put in for the license…but when I play a key on the keyboard, it shows nothing in reaper? I have installed the drivers into windows…and reaper seas it as a midi-device portable grand…so what am I doing wrong?

    • Cody  says:

Do you even know what a vst is?

  • Chris  says:

Hi. Is there a way to remove only the drums from a song (MP3, WAV) in Reaper? I would like to create a “drumless” version of my favorite song so that I can play along to it with my drumkit. Note that the song is (obviously) a finished song, and when I import it into Reaper I only see it as one track(i.e., there is no easy fix by simply removing the drumtrack only). Could you maybe do a Youtube tutorial? Thank you very much!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

the only way to do this is to pull down certain eq settings.. Its not practical.

  • Alicia  says:

Can you give me a demo of how to use the Yamaha S80 piano? The book is not very user friendly! I have this wonderful instrument and do not know how to use it!

  • Nikos  says:

Hi, I want to export multiple tracks from my triton to the reaper but not as midi. The problem is that I can’t synchronize the individual tracks I have to do this manually and the result is a mess. Can I record multiple wav track at the same time or to synchronize them somehow?
    Thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Your best bet is probably to record the MIDI from your Triton to Reaper. And once you do that use the MIDI OUT from reaper to trigger your sounds in the triton… and then Record the audio into the session. That way the session is controlling the midi… which will be the same each time.

If you have multiple midi tracks in the Triton.. it should be easier to line them up with a “clap” note on the beginning of each track (just place a single note on 1 and 3 of the first bar) after they are recorded.

      • Nikos  says:

        Thanks a lot m8!

  • Phil Murray  says:

    Hi Jonny,

I was wondering if you would consider posting up a tutorial on recording Hard Rock or Metal drums using Toontracks EZDrummer and Reaper. Plus recording hard rock Rhythm and Lead guitars, bass and vocals please?

And how to mix and master Heavy Rock tracks in general?

    cheers

    Phil

  • 1chance  says:

please can you do a tutorial that shows how to get stutter effects in reaper. read online that i could use the “midi trigger” to get stutter effects on vocals

  • Aira  says:

    hola,
im looking for descriptions and tutorials on how to make best use of reaper’s ability to produce songs overnet with rea-ninjam’s SESSION mode.
theres enough out there for jamming, but how to make best use of the session mode is rare…
would you care to create such a tut?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… I’ll have to mess around with NINJAM some more and see if I can get a sure-fire way to make this work.

      • Aira  says:

as i said, my Q is about the SESSION mode, not just the normal ninjam connection.
(for the usual ninjam mode theres already enough tut’s out there…)
        thanks!

  • Todd  says:

Hi, great tutorials! Any plans to do a Reamote tutorial? Also, I came from Ableton to mix in Reaper because its a lot like Pro Tools and 64-bit. Its really a deep program also I’m discovering. I’d like to use it as my laptop DAW more I’ve used Ableton in some sorts in the past (I know they are different beasts but I have my ideas). One strength of Ableton is the easy Midi Mapping for controllers to manipulate certain aspects like faders, vst filters etc. Is there a good route for Midi Controller Mapping in Reaper??????)

  • Matthew Corlett  says:

I am looking to record bass lines in Reaper, then trigger those bass lines to play with an external midi device. I have no experience using midi devices, and have only been using reaper for a few days to record a live band situation.

We will be using a DI splitter to record just the bass parts for songs we will play live without a bassist. As the guitar/vox, I will trigger different bass segments as needed with an external device (Akai MPD18).

Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?

    Thanks!!!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

you will probably be better off setting up your session as a backing track to a click track. That is probably the only way to keep it all in time with your live show.

  • Seamus Ryan  says:

Hey Jonny, I’ve enjoyed your tutorials so far and am considering buying the DVD… the feedback seems good and it’s probably worth the money to polish my work.

I’d like to request a tutorial on setting up midi controllers and assigning different faders to tracks, parameters, pan, etc. Probably wouldn’t need a whole 10-11 minute video, I’d say you could cover it in about 5 minutes, but it’d still be very useful. Also I’d like to know what options you have for live sample/loop triggering on Reaper. Thanks.

  • Jim  says:

Hi, I would love to see how to use snapshots in SWS to A/B two different versions of your work instantly.

  • Jorge Quiroz  says:

I recently started getting into recording. I am having a hard time figuring out how to use Kontakt Samples on Reaper. I currently use Mbox to record on reaper and I am using an axiom to control Kontakt. What I want to do is to record with the instruments from kontakt. Thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Have you watched my Kontakt routing video? It will teach you about routing in Reaper the long way around so you understand whats going on with the routing system. Also, there are other VSTi multi out videos that will further instruct you on how to do this.

  • Zac  says:

Hi i would really appreciate a basic mixing/mastering tutorial with exporting and rending tips. When i mean basic i mean only a two track edit. Vocals and a beat. Most people that would find this useful are beginner hip-hop artists, engineers, producers etc. The hip-hop genre is huge currently and a lot of people would find the tutorial useful including me.

    Thanks, Zac.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm.. most hip-hop productions have many more that a single vocal. I cover full production on the Real World Recording video set and production of beats on the MIDI production video set.

      • Zac  says:

So you can’t make a tutorial on how to mix and master vocals to a beat?

  • Alien  says:

Hey do you have any suggestions to do when the “s” sound is too loud?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

you can use ReaComp as a DeEsser by defining the high and low pass filter and setting the ration and threshold to taste.

      • Alien  says:

        thanks, helped out alot

  • Alien  says:

i’ll be sure to come here if i have any more questions

  • Cal  says:

A tutorial for beginners would be great: something where there is no assumption you already know the terminology. Basics like selection, glue, copy, loop. As if it were made for a third grader.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Have you seen any of my first videos? I have a couple Overview/Basic overview type videos that might hit this area.

  • Alien  says:

What can you use as a multi-meter in Reaper when mastering? Like the one in Logic Pro?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

There are some graphical analyzers in the JS section, I use T-Racks Master Meter though.

  • Abhinav Joshua  says:

I have been searching for so long but I can’t find a single tutorial on REAPER for recording and mixing guitars through VSTi plugins like the ignite amps, lecabs, impulse responses. Most of the people in today’s world are using these problem free plugins. But still, some of them (like me) can’t achieve “the sound”..!!!
So, kindly please put a tutorial which can help not only in “How to record guitars” but also how to mix them and also the final output!
    Thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I think this is more of a “journey for the ultimate tone”. Maybe a guitar site would help out better on this. If I were a guitar player I would be able to help you get the right GTR tone… once its tracked I can set it in the mix… but creating it from scratch (whcih GTR to use, amp)isn’t my area of expertise… My expertise starts at mic selection and placement. The amp modelers can be very tricky to get sounding right. Typically I have to put a compressor before the modeler to give it more of a “tube” type sustain.

  • Lucas  says:

Can you create a tutorial on setting up reaper with the new behringer X32? I would love to be able to record and playback the mix and remix with the faders on the console.
    thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

If you send me one I can make a tutorial for it. :-)

  • Dwight Fontenot  says:

    Hello,
I just purchased Reaper and am using it for the first time. I would like to record/mix my drum kit using Reaper. I’m running all of my drum mics through a Behringer USB mixing board. Is there a tutorial for the infant stages of recording with Reaper on a MAC? I’m not even sure how to assign Channels to snare, kick, toms, etc. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dwight

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Have you checked out some of my first videos on the site? the basic over view one will show you how to add tracks and rename then and change the input of each channel so you can multi track record(as long as your interface allows it).
