hey im having some trouble rewiring reaper into protools can you please either put up a tutorial or send me the instructions thankyou

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’ll install my tutorial recording software onto my main studio rig and see what i can do for you. :-)

  • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Well I have started using Reaper and feel its a pretty awesome DAW. I am a basic Pro tools user shifting to Reaper.

I just have few queries and hope you can help me become a decent Reaper user to create and Mix decent audio with Reaper.

    1) I just want to know Reaper doesn’t have an Aux function instead can we use a normal Audio track for adding effects.

    2) If there ain’t an Aux option what if I want to do Stem mixing for instance I have 4 rhythm track, 4 vocal tracks and need an individual Aux for both Rhythm and Vocal section for better mixing.

    3) One of your tutorial with addictive drums shows how to record individual track as Audio. What if I say I have 3 to 4 different Vsti midi recorded instruments for bass and Drums. How can I render and record it to 2 individual new Audio tracks as Audio recording. In short a Midi to Audio recording. How would be the routing in Reaper.

    4) Would appreciate if you can help me how to real time render record just like in Pro tools for Reaper once mixing is done with.

I know I have quite a few questions but would appreciate your help as I want to switch to Reaper for doing my mixes as Pro tools has a lot of Hardware and Software limitations.

I’ll see what I can do for you. Those are some good issues that need to be covered. Although I think #1 is covered in the “OverView” video that I did. #2 in the “Folders” video. For #3 I would need to know the VSTi… otherwise you can right click and render to stem. #4 In the “Mix down and Render video”

      • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Any popular VSTi say for example Kore 2, Kontact, Toontrack. Will check all your videos and try to understand as well.

  • Khushal Bhadra  says:

Well John which skin theme are you using for Reaper, I also see you have a Virtual Keyboard shortcut for Reaper which normally it doesn’t have.

Can you share your customized Theme with us?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I am using the Apollo theme which is linked off of my website under the Theme changing tutorial.

To make a virtual keyboard button you “Right-Click” on the button area. Click “Add” then in the filter on the top left type in “Virtual Keyboard” and the first option should be a “Show: Virtual keyboard”… Double click it. Assign an Icon if you wish.. save and close the window.

  • paigepopejoy  says:

Jonny, Hey I’m having difficulty with “reatune” in Reaper for Mac. Everytime I set the key “a#” and “Major” for a particular song, it will automatically reset itself to “A”, “Locrian”. I’ve attempted to click “automatic pitch correction” both on and off and can never get the settings to remain as I’ve set them. Is there another setting somewhere that I’m missing or is the plugin faulty? Thank you.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… I think this would be a question for the Devs at Reaper.

  • E.J  says:

HELLO I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT…IMPORTING A SESSION FROM REASON INTO REAPER…I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO IMPORT MY SESSIONS FROM REASONS IN TO REAPER IN AUDIO FORMAT..I KNOW THAT REASONS IS ALL MIDI…BUT I NEED TO IMPORT ALL MY SESSIONS 80 OF THEM..FROM REASONS TO REAPER…NOT IN ONE SINGLE AUDIO TRACK BUT IN INDIVIDUAL AUDIO STEMS

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

The Reason tutorial that I have up can be used to do this.

  • Jim  says:

I found your site searching for Reaper tutorials.
I started watching the beginning recording one but don’t get any sound. Is there sound with the video.
My soundcard is already busy with Reaper open.
Is that why I can’t hear sound from the video?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’m not sure what your setup is… but if you st the audio interface to WaveOut you should be able to hear an internet browser and reaper at the same time.

  • Eric  says:

hey man, sorry if this is a bit off topic. i was looking through your recommended products and saw the Yamaha and Behringer monitors. I can only afford one set, so i was wondering which ones you reccomend….Yamaha HS50′s or Behringer Truth 2031a’s.

    cheers man

  • sylvainB  says:

    Hello Johnny,

I found by coincidence your site and it’s beautiful one.

    We can improve with reaper.

    But I have a problem I can’t resolve …even after watching
    your tutorial about “changing theme”

When I change my color theme, most of time the tool bar and tracks stay with a bad looking.

It’s far of the screenshot of their theme that the guys post on the net.

I don’t understand what is the problem because I do the same thing than your video.

I noticed one important thing: the only themes which work very well are these which have a file named ReaperIconsZip

Most of the theme I find on the Net don’t have this file

    What can I do?

MANY THANKS FOR ANSWERING ME ANG CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR
    SITE.

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

You mentioned using the Apollo Theme vs Default. Does this come with Reaper 3.74 (latest version) or do I need to download it somewhere? Why is it better…? Just starting with the software, but very familiar with ACID and Audition 3.

    Thanks

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

Ok, so I was viewing your tutorial on recording, and I have questions. The way my set-up is now, if I want to record an “impOSCar” lead to a song I’m working on, I load a basic “click track” ( drum loop, synth chords, maybe bass ) in ACID, I insert a MIDI track, load imposcar, arm and wail. If I want to record a guitar part, I load a click track in Audition, arm record, and begin. Will it be easier in Reaper or can I load an audio track as a click and record MIDI while playing with the audio. Does this make sense?

    Thanks

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

Jonny, Thanks for getting back to me regarding my other two questions. Just watched your ASIO4ALL vid. When I tried this in ACID Music 7, it sucked big-time! I’m running an Audigy 2 ZS card, and I have the best luck with “Microsoft Mapper” selected…NO latency with even big programs like Kontakt 3.5. When I installed ASIO4ALL the first thing I noticed was ACID took 3x the usual to load, then after I selected it in ACID everything within ACID slowed way down! I even had drop-out, which I never have usually, with programs like NI Pro 53, ME-80, Memorymoon, imposcar, etc. Maybe Reaper will handle ASIO4ALL better, (it’s selecting Microsoft Mapper now, but haven’t loaded anything in it to make sound yet), or maybe there are conflicts between ASIO4ALL and Creative SB products? What do you think?

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

Last question of the day! I’ve got VST effects and instruments spread out over 3 folders. Do I just keep adding folders that need to be included in the overall scan? ACID distingushes between VST effects and instruments, (i.e. when I insert MIDI track, and insert a VST instrument, I don’t get VST instruments AND VST effects showing all at once). Does Reaper do the same?

    Thanks

  • Adam  says:

I can’t wait for the dvd(s?) to ship. I have been waiting for these for a few years. I will pre-order this Friday (payday).

Thank you so much for making this.

  • CURTIS RICH  says:

Hi—I’m trying to download the lame encoder so I can convert files to mp3, but no luck so far (or no know/how). I’m not very computer savvy, so that doesn’t help. It says to install Lame into the same directory as Reaper.exe, and I’m already lost there. Can you help? Sorry if this is too lame to bother with.
    Thanks!

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

    Hi Jonathan,

I just began playing around with Reaper 3.74 last night. After some frustrating beginnings, I successfully imported vsti’s, did some basic routing, etc, (thanks to your videos…and the very LARGE user guide). Anyway, in ACID I can drag and drop .wav files into the “production area” (TCP). Is there a place where I can preview my .wavs (in order to choose the ones I want to work with), and just drag them to the TCP area instead of importing them? They were loading one on top of the other, and I want them to load underneath one another.

    Thank you

  • Bob McDaris  says:

I am new to reaper. My question is how do you sync up tracks at the begining of a song. everything starts at different times. Is there a way to sync all that???? I have tried different things and can’t get it to work.

  • Lisa J Landone  says:

    Hi,

Using the trial version but love it. Am exporting all of my
sessions from pro tools into Reaper. Question, when I upgrade Reaper and buy the full version, will I be able to keep all of the projects i imported into the trial version i am using.
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Glad to hear your joy!

Yes, everything you do in the trail is transferable to the full version… The only difference from the trial to full version is that the full version has a registry key in it. :)

I am currently stationed in Thailand. Every time I have ordered anything from the States, it has taken a month and held up in customs, taxes are involved, etc.I think that the $30 tutorial package is a great deal. Will you have it in a downloadable version?
    Thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

You are the second person to ask about this in the last couple days… I will look deeper into this and let you know.

  • Ivansc  says:

Hey Johnny – How do us lot in europe go about getting the DVD?

I assume you are not going to mail it to us for $5, so maybe a download option could be set up if you don`t already have one?
The other difficulty in the UK is that if we receive physical goods like a DVD, we have to pay 20% Customs VAT and also Customs Duty, which would wind up doubling or even tripling the cost to us.

    Ivan

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

This is a valid concern, but I believe that I should be able to facilitate this as an option. I’ll e-mail you with more info.

  • Adam  says:

Today is the day!!! I’m excited.

I was wondering about the format of the downloadable version. Is it just a dvd iso or is it digital video files in .mp4 or .mkv or … ?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Its going to be a Zip file to Download.

And the contents will be a browser based video/file launcher.
      Video format is Quicktime .MOV

I’m having some issues with the upload to the server :-( … but It will be up soon.

I shipped all USA customers DVDs at Noon EST time.

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

    Hi Jonny,

Do I need to totally uninstall Reaper to go from version 3.74 to 3.75?

    Thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

No sir… you can install right over top of it.

  • Robert S.  says:

    Hey Jonny,

I just finished watching your Real World Recording w/Reaper DVD and I must say that the money I spent on your DVD was more than worth it. Your DVD cleared up the problems I was having…particularly in mastering.

A couple of questions for you….

1). When is your MIDI DVD going to come out?
2). What other non-Reaper type of plugins do you use?
3). Do you still us Pro Tools? Or is Reaper your main DAW?

    Thanks again,
    Robert

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Hey Robert!

Thanks for the kind words, I’m very glad you enjoyed the new DVD!

      Answers to your Qs.
      1. MIDI DVD doesn’t have a set release date because I’m still putting the ideas together… But I’m hoping within a couple months.
      2. Are you talking in general? I am a BIG fan of WAVES SSL 4000(Channel plugin and EQ), almost everything from Variety Of Sound, AcmeBarGig Amp Sims… I’m sure there are more I use that I can’t think of… or for the MIDI DVD? I haven’t decided on which VSTi I’ll use… I need to find a free Mac/Windows sound font player. My plan is to use all free sounds and FX for all my videos so that everyone can obtain everything either on the DVD for free with the DVD videos or from a free download from the web.
      3. I only use Pro Tools if the client requests it… but even with that I still import my drum and bass tracks into Reaper for editing/re-sampling. If the client is paying hourly then I don’t care what I use(PT I make more money because its slower)… If the client is paying PER SONG I push to use Reaper. :-)

E-mail or call if you have more questions.

  • reggie  says:

It has been awhile since our last communication. Your advice and tutorials have assisted me in a number of ways.
I record with Reaper using a Mackie 1640i mixer. And don’t mix in the box, so to speak. Do you have any tutorials, information or suggestions for this method of recording and mixing? I would like to receive your input, as I am not able to find much infomration using Reaper with an analog/digital mixer.

  • reggie  says:

How will I benefit by purchasing of your tutorial if I using an analog mixer and not the Reaper mixer? I would like to see or have explained how to mix in this method and send the results back to Raaper as a final mix, and create a CD.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank again for your tutorials.

  • Gary Tomassetti  says:

    Hi, Jonny:

The question I currently have about Reaper can be seen at this thread on Gearslutz:

    http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/597107-help-needed-reaper-routing.html

Your video was awesome, and incredibly helpful. But I’m wondering if you can tell me how — or if it’s even possible — that I can just use my MIDI keyboard to access any particular track like I can in Pro Tools (as I mention in comment #7 in that thread).

Thanks very much, and best regards,

    Gary

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I sent you an E-mail Gary.. lets try to figure this out!

  • David Somerville  says:

    Hey Jonny,

I have had some issues setting up the Action for SWS Gofer as your steps mentioned. I installed the SWS fine but the Gofer one is not there. Do I use another now?

    Thanks

  • David Somerville  says:

Got it Jonny! Thanks I do not know what happened as I had it installed before but it did not show up in the list.

  • Ryan  says:

Hi, wondering if you ship the DVDs to Canada? thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      For Sure! I ship internationally!

I look forward to the order!

  • Jimmy V  says:

The Kontakt video is what I want as I have an XITE-1 that uses DSP and hardware routing, and Kontakt is in standalone when I gig, but want to start using Reaper as a host.
Your video is green and while I can hear the audio, I need to see the video.
    Can you fix this maybe…?
It’s a green screen with audio only.
I have checked back for a week now, so maybe you didn’t know.

    Thanks

  • Tim  says:

    Hey Johnny,

Looks like the tutorial dvd is awesome. Im just making the transition over to PC recording(reaper)from my 8 track digital recorder. It’s a bit intimidating right now, but the editing process looks to be a peice of cake! Anyway, Im writing jingles for a firm out of NY for cable programs, and I really want my recordings to shine. Ive had downloads, but no placements yet with the firm, so I think its the polish I need to work on… Can you get me there with this tutorial dvd? (thats a hell of a question, huh) Thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I think it should get you in the right direction. I’ll e-mail you more details.

  • Morten Haga  says:

    Hi!

First of all, thanks for all the great Reaper tutorials. 1 question for you: I want to use the reason regroove mixer on my drums when reawiring. Does the rewire function allow me to do this?

    Cheers.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I will have to test this out. I’m assuming the ReGroove mixer alters the MIDI notes in the sequencer and not the LIVE midi going into Reason. You could aways do your MIDI editing for the groove in Reason and still rewire the audio back into Reaper. But I’ll try to get my hands on some Grooves and test to see if you can sequence in Reaper and have the Groove mixer change the sound.

  • Daniel Mahler  says:

    Hey man.
I tried to use the Apollo skin that is on your website, but it looks completely different (uglier) than the Apollo that you were using on your youtube video. I’ve tried heaps of different setting changes, but to no avail. Is there something obvious I am missing, i.e. a reaper update or something of that nature? thanks for the great website and vids :)
    Daniel Mahler

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… Well I have the faders switched with Rado and the editing grid set to all Black lines.. other then that I don’t think I changed much.

  • Jas  says:

Hey I just bought the DL of your tutorials. I was wondering if you could tell me how to make that Custom: Split at mouse cursor, crossfade into split thing.. That would save SO much time if I could get that action! Thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

That’t the Gofer Macro which is included in the SWS extensions. Did you watch the pre-face videos? I show you how to set it up in there.

Here is a direct link to Gofers macro http://stash.reaper.fm/4599/gofer%20split%20grouped%20items%20at%20mouse%20curso%20crossfade%20into%20splitr.ReaperKeyMap

Its slightly different then the one included with SWS but you would go to the same actions menu and then click “Import”, then navigate to the downloaded keymap. Then assign it to the key combo of your choice.

      • Jas  says:

Hey yes I did watch the pre-face ones. Whenever I go to import this file I can only find the SWS/gofer:Split selected items at mouse cursor (obey snapping)… what am I doing wrong?

        • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Search for “Custom” or “Split at” and you should find it.

  • Marcel Beleu  says:

Hey, do you have a tutorial where you show us how we can use a function in reaper to save the project and copy only the used files?
When I save a project and record multiple audio/midi items, all of them are saved in the project folder. I need only the ones used in the project.

    Cheers!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

This will be covered in an upcoming video.

  • Frank Doblekar  says:

“Midi Routing – Kontakt 4 | Route Midi to VSTi and Back to Separate Audio Tracks | Render Each Instrument Properly”

The above tut was a great help with Kontakt 4. I also used it with Spectrasonics: Omnisphere and RMX.
My trouble is with the Toontrack line’s Superior Drummer. Any ideas on how to get it working as the above tut?

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Hello Frank,

Superior Drummer has a Mixer section which you will need to change the “OUT” from “Main” or “1-2″ to individual outputs, i.e. out 1 (kick), out 2 (snare).

Then then routing should work. You can also use the quick multi out option to break out the audio tracks per channel… But you will still need to tell the VSTi to actually send audio to them.

Any questions just email or call. Hope everything went will with the DVD. :)

  • kev7  says:

hi, i am a newbie to digital recording in general. i was wondering how i could could get reaper to record audio and midi control my old school ensoniq eps 16 at the same time. your help would be very much appreciated. thanks

  • Michael  says:

    Hey there, love the vids.

When editing drums using your video example with the gofer key command, how on earth do we see millisecond info, like pro tools shows you the amount in a counter as you move the audio-thus making it real easy to know how many milliseconds the audio has been moved (to keep it between 3-8 for instance) , otherwise how do you tell? surely not by eyeballing the ruler?

    help!

    thanks, Michael

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

It don’t think it will show you the MS moved.

But you can check MS distance by right clicking the “Selection” readout at the bottom right of the transporter and then selecting “Min:Seconds”. now if you turn off your snap to grid you will be able to make a time selection on the ruler from the grid to the beat to see how far away it is.

As far as the “how do you know”… Yes I do eyeball it at this point… because I’ve see how far 10ms is by the method above… and I’ve probably corrected about 100,000 drum hits or more. (lol). I’m sure you will get to this point too but you do need to know how far it is so you can start to “eyeball it”.

  • angelinni  says:

Hi, I just bought the download version. A (very) stupid question. Is there any artwork to print a cover for this?
At other hand, reading the comments you’re thinking about a tutorial for MIDI? I’ll buy that for sure ;)

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Unfortunately I don’t have any artwork for the DVD. When I send then I do an Eco Sleeve and a stamp… of my logo on it. :-) Little rustic I know… But I’m not a big commercial place to get some serious DVD art done.

As far as the MIDI goes. Yes it is coming! been very busy with recording projects, my music venue job and life… But It’s in the works. :-) I’ll be sending out notifications on Youtube, Reaper forums and to all the past purchasers of the DVD when its near release for Pre-Orders. :-)

  • bhooks  says:

Johnny, I unzipped the apollo theme from the dvd and put it in the theme folder in the program folder. but it never showed up
in there. was this the right place to put it. i am now using reaper 4.01 with windows xp

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Oh, thats not the right location. I’m pretty sure 1 of the preface videos show you where to put it but if it doesn’t… You open Reaper, go to Options, then “Show Resource folder…” then in there you will see a “Color Themes” folder. Copy the Apollo file into there. There should be a .ReaperTheme file and a folder or a .reaperthemezip

Hope that helps. For R4 I use the default theme with some grid lines modified.

  • Meg Labba  says:

Hi, I love reaper. Prob is I got a new computer and lost my purchase “key” number. I could buy the whole thing again, but would prefer not to. Any help? Thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Well I don’t work for Reaper so you would have to e-mail the reaper guys and ask them. If your e-mail is on file they should be able to give you your license again.

  • Joel Grizzel  says:

I am one guy who would be interested in Orchestral Mockups using midi in Reaper. My vote.

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

    Hi Jonny,

You might have covered this before, but… I have several VSTi’s with sequencers (like Atomic). If I want to send the sequencer info to another instrument, how would I set that up? Sort of like Pete Townsend sending the 2500 sequencer to another hardware instrument. (Still working with Reaper 3.76)

    Thanks

  • Eric  says:

    Hi Jonny,

I see that the DVD covers these topics:

    Real World Recording W/Reaper

    1. Intro to the tools we will be using
    2. Setup Tempo, Scratch tracking/editing
    3. Drum Tracking/Editing + Bass Tracking/Editing
    4. Keyboard, GTR, and AC Tracking and Editing
    5. Vocal Tracking/Comping
    6. Vocal Tuning and Harmony creation
    7. Mixing – Applying FX and getting balance
    7a. Drums and Bass
    7b. GTR
    7c. Keys and AC
    7d. Vocals and Harmonies.
    8. Mixing – Automations and Envelopes.
    9. Mastering – Importing Rendered tracks, Useing the plugins, Getting the right volume, and Burning your music with Reaper.

Do you sort of walk a song through its lifecycle?

    Thx,

    Eric

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’m not totally sure what you mean by “Walk a song through its lifecycle”… But the DVD goes through an entire production of 1 song. So you will see the production steps for tracking, editing, mixing and mastering instrument by instrument till the song is fully done to master and burned to a CD.

  • Christian  says:

    Hi Jonny,

I just purchased the download version. Can you tell me how long the processing time will be until I receive it? Also, you and a fellow user discussed the possibility of you releasing a MIDI tutorial. Do you know when that’s likely to be? I really look forward to that. Thanks so much. Christian

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I manually e-mail out all the orders. :-) Sorry for the delay, I’m on EST time.

      I’m sending it out now.

MIDI DVD is coming.. life has been really busy here which is putting a big delay on a lot of stuff. :-( But I’m trying!

  • Layne Maclachlan  says:

Hey so i messaged you on youtube, and you got back tome quick i appreciate it a lot man. But it doesn’t seem to be doing anything. I Can hear it fine. But like i said it keeps going into the red the desibles that is. I’ve tried moving the slider around on master and the track i’m wanting to record on but still it is maxing out when i even talk loud into my mic >.< I'm sorry to be bugging you, you just really know what you are doing.

I finally figure out the routing issue with rewire. But I have a question. sorry if I’m being a bother. But here it is. I got the routing together for the instance of kontakt for first 16 channels on my first virtual port in bidule. But I need at least 7 more instance of kontakt. I’m stuck on how to route the sends in reaper for the next virtual port in bidule. When I tried to do that reaper would just send the signal back to the first 16 tracks. I just need to know how to configure it so each instance will have their own channels. Thankyou. And I have looked on the forums but I couldn’t find an answer for this. Thankyou again. it seems like i can only gwet 16 channels of rewire in reaper. i need at least 16 channels for each virtual port in bidule. i hope me message was clear. if you can can you please post some instructions or a tutorial

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hey man, it was good talking to you on the phone. Sorry we couldn’t get bidule working for you.. but I think we got your problem solved using dedicated processes in reaper for each plugin. Have fun!

    Hey!
Just finished watching your TFR dvd, thanks a lot! Really helpful tips.
Just one thing; in the tempo video you don’t hear the metronome or anything, is it supposed to be like that? I was like; Heh? Am I not hearing something?

    Thanks again!

you should be using the Media browser to pull your Midi files into the project. And you need to make sure you have the time basis menu on the media browser to “match tempo?

I can’t find the plugin FX chain presets on the tutorials. Is there any way you could send me a copy of these fx chains so I can use them. I’m sorry I haven’t kept up with you. I was talking with you on skype a lot a couple months ago. I love the videos. However,I could use those fx chains and other presets.

Hello Jonny! I have a little “problem” and I believe you’re the guy to explain it to me :)

I think there’s a way where you send some tracks to another one (“kinda” like folders) but you can only hear sound from the “master” track and not the individual others.

Let’s say I have 4 tom tracks (tom1, tom2 etc) and I want to process them all together. Now, I either create a folder or I send those 4 tracks to a master “Toms” track, I’m not sure. And somehow, I can have sound coming only from the master track, the individuals are kind of muted.

I’m almost certain I’ve seen this happening on some video, unfortunately it’s been too long for me to remember where or how it’s done. Can you shed some light on the matter?

    Thanks a lot

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… the bet way to do this IMO is folders.. but you coudl make sends from the “Tom” tracks to a “Master Tom” track and then disable the “Tom” tracks master send by ALT+Click’ing the IO button. This will let the send from the “Tom” track pass through to the “Master Tom” channel but not from “Tom” track to the main session Master.

      Hope that helps!

      • Wise_One  says:

The “sends” way worked like a charm, thank you. I’ll probably stick to folders yeah, but for the reason I needed the “sends”, it was fine.

        Cheers

Hi Jonny, Very impressive site. Thinking of a purchase myself. I am trying to locate an engineer I lost touch with years ago. His Name is Michael Ginese. During my searches I came up with your name. I am a hasbeen musician getting into the digital world with my home studio just recently setup. About 30 years ago this guy (and his wife) helped me cut a demo in his analog studio. Let me tell you this dude was a musical genius(as I’m sure you are too),but he put a twist on my tune and re-arranged it as well. I always looked up to him and wonder if you are any relation. The cassette he gave me is still a hit with everyone who hears it .This was back in the 80s in NY.I see you are in TN. I really want to see if he ever got published and would like some tips on how he enhanced my vocals. Any relation ?? Have you heard of him?? When I left NY he had Leslie West and Felix Cavalier (rascals) recording at his farmhouse studio. Any help finding him would be greatly appreciated !! If no relation, I certainly appologize.
    Regards and Thx, J. Hammer

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… This almost seems like a setup… HaHa… I’m SURE you are talking about my father Michael Ginese. And yes he knows his stuff ;-) I learned pretty much all I know about the sound world from him…

You must be a smart dude. My name is Jay. I used to gig with your uncle Tony 3-4 nights a week back around 1976. Everything I said was true. I have been looking for your dad. Sounded like Olivia Newton John in her prime. First take. I really am interested in yor site. I am very tired right now but I got some questions for you my friend.WIll be in touch.

Hello, I’m new to Reaper and have been running Adobe Audition 3 on my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5720: Intel core 2 duo processor, 2.7 gig, 800MHz, 2Gig DDR2, running MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1

My question: Is there a Reaper version that will run glitch-free on my laptop or is the latest version of Reaper 4 (32 download for Windows XP) going to be AOK? I’ve been very happy with Adobe Audition 3 but unfortunately a lot of users are very dissatisfied with the latest updates and it’s actually less useful/desireable and Adobe don’t listen to their end users, which is a very absurd policy. It means that my version of Adobe has a very limited scope of use and althought it’s taught me the ropes of using a software DAW thanks to its user friendly interface, I think it might be time to move on now to a more sophisticated DAW and Reaper would be my choice, if I can get it to run on my system! Thank you so much for reading and I hope you’ll have a moment to drop me a line about it! PS: Does Reaper include full mastering facilities? And another question I have is: How do the innumerable record labels manage to produce CD’s that sound great on any playback system! I still don’t know how to achieve that – do you believe there is any such thing as a ‘default’ EQ mastering curve, one that could be appliec to all finalised recordings? – Andy Martin

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

      Hey there!

Thanks for visiting the site! I’m not sure how REAPER will run on your system except that I know it runs fine on any system i’ve tried it on. It has a 30 day trial so i woudl jstu a bunch of tests to see if it fits your needs in the stability area.

Does Reaper include full mastering facilities?
There are some JS plugins that are included that will help you out with this but I’m not sure if you will ge able to get the ultra pro sound with them… but indie label quality shouldnt be a problem.

How do the innumerable record labels manage to produce CD’s that sound great on any playback system?
Years of practice, experience and the right studio monitors that “translate” will. A lot of studios will have a normal set of studio monitors that are very clean and crisp(what you would expect to hear in a studio) and then another pair that are “reference monitors” which SHOULD make your mix sound “uglier” which will help you tune in the mix to sound better on all systems. The industry standard reference monitor is a Yamaha NS-10. They are out of production so you will have to find a different good Reference monitor. All that aside most of the finished Major label CD’s you hear will have been recorded on very expensive gear use Mastered with an Analog chain.. then put back into a DAW to finish up. But start with practice, Experience and Studio monitors that translate well. :-)

do you believe there is any such thing as a ‘default’ EQ mastering curve, one that could be appliec to all finalised recordings?
Not 100%… there are typical EQ curves in a general sense.. but no End-All solution. Best way is to take a reference track from a Major label artist that “matches” your sound or clients sound and then do your best to match the EQ curve with instrument eqing and levels and then EQ curve.

  • Mike  says:

i play acoustic…i want to use reaper fx-waves live for my compression, EQ and such…i would make the fx chain and save it…call it up on stage..play the guitar with the effects i created…it seems to me i can only hear effects when i use the monitor function…will this go through the PA speakers?

    Thanks

    Mike

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

You will have to have your interface set to a low buffer to minimize latency. Then you will need to use the Monitor button on the track you want to hear in order to hear the effected sound. If you run a stereo sent to the PA after that you should hear the sound with compression and EQ

  • sean  says:

    johnny,

i really dig your site, and your tutorials. keep up the good work.

i do have a question(s) – when you are slip editing drum takes, how do you know the bpm/tempo to lock to? is this predetermined during the time of performance with a metronome/click track? or do you go in after the drummer has tracked, and do the beat detective thing?

    thanks!
    *sean

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

The ideal situation would be to track your drums to Reapers click/Metronome/MIDI beat to the BPM you want. If its already tracked and you are trying to edit it to a certain BPM you can use the beat detecting techniques… But It’s not Ideal. I’ve had to do this for Live shows that people have gotten on and off a click.. but its a pretty big process or make it sound good. So if you have control over it I’d record WITH a click/metronome from REAPER and then edit to that grid once you are done.

  • Quest  says:

I was watching your “Drum Rescue” video, and before I even got through the first minute, I noticed something about how you were splitting and moving the tracks in a group. When you split the items, and dragged to the RIGHT, it didn’t leave a gap in the audio, rather, it filled in. How did you do that?! What’s that called in Reaper? Back to the video…

    • Quest  says:

Wait! Somehow I just figured it out, but still don’t know what its called. I held down the ALT key and dragged, and it didn’t allow a gap. What the heck is that called? Thanks.

      • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Slip editing. You need the Xfade in and out macro to make is sound as seamless as possible though.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

That was Slip editing. I have a video on that too called “split/slip editing”. It uses a Xfade in and out macro and you hold ALT+Leftclick to move the media item content within the item location. Welcome to the future.. its why I started using Reaper. I can edit a drum track in about 30 minutes manually. In Pro Tools that would take someone that is an Edittor doing drum edits for 40 hrs a week.. about 2 hrs to do the same song using Pro Tools manual editing methods.

P.S: I had my Pro Tools manual editing methods down to about 2.5hrs for a 3:30 minute drum track… same song in reaper will take me 30 minutes.

      • Quest  says:

Ya see, THIS is why I love Reaper! Not only does it provide a super-efficient work flow, but I’m constantly learning new things to better that work flow! Thanks for the work you do.

While I use reaper I can record fine but the problem is when I try to play back what I have recorded on my computer. I can play the track back when I use the midi output for my drum set and I hear it through the amp that is plugged into to it, but when it isn’t plugged into it I can’t hear it on my computer’s speakers, and it says the computer usage is 0. Also when I save it as an MP3 file I still can’t hear any music.

    Can you please help me!!!!!!

Hi, I just wanted to know how to put your vocals on beat if some parts are not proper. Like in the new Antares or Vari audio for cubase you have this option to cut down vibrato, extend some part, get the vocals on beat if it misses. Is there any way to do that with Reaper. Would appreciate a tutorial on the same.

  • greg  says:

I’m new to home recording and reaper. I have a mackie 1640i firewired in. When I go to Audio Device setting, for Input Device I seem to only have a choice of stereo pairs (e.g. Analog in 13-14 (Mackie Onyx)). I don’t understand how to get it to use all 16 channels at once for the input device.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I don’t have this unit but I would suspect that you need to go into the audio settings and tell it to select all your inputs. at the top right of Reaper there is an area that tells your your bit rate information with your buffer size info. left click on that and you will get a menu where you can choose your first and last input and output. If in that menu you only see the options you mentioned you should post on the Reaper forums since a few active members are using this same mackie board.

    Hi all,
i made a mix on reaper , there are 9 different tracks or songs , i divide the mix by shift+M and burn it on reaper but after when i listened i reliased that there are silence when tracks changes so it isnt a mix after all. Please help me although i arrenge render menu ,lead in silence for tracks and extra lead silence for disc are 0 . Thank you very much.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

This is a bug that has yet to be resolved. i have to render each track individually and then use a program like NERO to burn it with a 1 sec Xfade to make it seamless.

  • Dan Rose  says:

I’ve been testing Reaper for the Mac off and on being a Logic user. So I have tried to get Reaper set up to somewhat emulate my Logic setup. I guess the cursor jumping to where you click on the screen has been an issue for many users (other than Protools) which I thought they were going to make that an option? Has that happened as I still don’t see a setting in prefs…

    Thanks!

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

  • KillBill  says:

hi i was wondering if you could make a video on how to get the sound to work on reaper i dont understand how to get it to work or how to record my voice and edit it into the song anything would be helpful thanks

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

I’m not quite sure where your road block is in this one. My basic Overview will show you how to setup an interface and how to get signal into your channel so you can hear it/record.

  • Stephanie  says:

I just started using Reaper today. And midi input devices. I get zero playback sound even thought all volume levels are up and not muted on the track and the mixer. I can hear the metronome but that is the only thing I can hear. It is recording the files because I exported it and opened it in WMP. I have both of the sliders at 2/3 and still get no playback sound.

    • JonnyGinese JonnyGinese  says:

Hmm… So are you recording… you cna see signal and a wave form recorded.. or midi notes recorded and see the red midi note indicator on the meter… but when you render you don’t hear it?

When you assign the midi channel sometimes you have to set it to “all channels” to get it to hit your VSTi properly. Also.. you need to make sure you have a VSTi on the channel as a plugin that is going to play sound back for you. There are plenty of free ones online that you can find. The Reaper forums has a great post of all free plugins including VSTi’s and stuff.

  • Robert Peinkofer  says:

Hi, I posted this on the Reaper Forum, however no responses. Can’t be that difficult to answer. All I want to do is have a synth lead sound (mono) on one side, and have the delay effect sound on the other side. Not sure if I do channel splitting to get this or something additional. I’ve tried it with simple panning, but I got sound bleeding in the center for some reason. Any suggestions? Thanks
