This is a bug that has yet to be resolved. i have to render each track individually and then use a program like NERO to burn it with a 1 sec Xfade to make it seamless.

I don't have this unit but I would suspect that you need to go into the audio settings and tell it to select all your inputs. at the top right of Reaper there is an area that tells your your bit rate information with your buffer size info. left click on that and you will get a menu where you can choose your first and last input and output. If in that menu you only see the options you mentioned you should post on the Reaper forums since a few active members are using this same mackie board.

well you should have 1 "midi" track per instrument and 1 "audio" track to receive the sound back. If you set it up this way you can record on each channel individually and listen back to others at the same time.

How do you play back tracks and record other tracks along with them? Using this routing I've been able to record multiple tracks (that all show up BOTH on the track I'm recording AND in 1st "Kontakt track") but can only hear one at a time.

Thanks:
All of the Video demos on this site are VERY HELPFUL!

I'm new to home recording and reaper. I have a mackie 1640i firewired in. When I go to Audio Device setting, for Input Device I seem to only have a choice of stereo pairs (e.g. Analog in 13-14 (Mackie Onyx)). I don't understand how to get it to use all 16 channels at once for the input device.

Have you watched my Kontakt routing video? It will teach you about routing in Reaper the long way around so you understand whats going on with the routing system. Also, there are other VSTi multi out videos that will further instruct you on how to do this.

I recently started getting into recording. I am having a hard time figuring out how to use Kontakt Samples on Reaper. I currently use Mbox to record on reaper and I am using an axiom to control Kontakt. What I want to do is to record with the instruments from kontakt. Thanks!

Hi, I just wanted to know how to put your vocals on beat if some parts are not proper. Like in the new Antares or Vari audio for cubase you have this option to cut down vibrato, extend some part, get the vocals on beat if it misses. Is there any way to do that with Reaper. Would appreciate a tutorial on the same.

While I use reaper I can record fine but the problem is when I try to play back what I have recorded on my computer. I can play the track back when I use the midi output for my drum set and I hear it through the amp that is plugged into to it, but when it isn't plugged into it I can't hear it on my computer's speakers, and it says the computer usage is 0. Also when I save it as an MP3 file I still can't hear any music.

Can you please help me!!!!!!

Hey Jonny, I've enjoyed your tutorials so far and am considering buying the DVD... the feedback seems good and it's probably worth the money to polish my work.

I'd like to request a tutorial on setting up midi controllers and assigning different faders to tracks, parameters, pan, etc. Probably wouldn't need a whole 10-11 minute video, I'd say you could cover it in about 5 minutes, but it'd still be very useful. Also I'd like to know what options you have for live sample/loop triggering on Reaper. Thanks.

you will probably be better off setting up your session as a backing track to a click track. That is probably the only way to keep it all in time with your live show.

I am looking to record bass lines in Reaper, then trigger those bass lines to play with an external midi device. I have no experience using midi devices, and have only been using reaper for a few days to record a live band situation.

We will be using a DI splitter to record just the bass parts for songs we will play live without a bassist. As the guitar/vox, I will trigger different bass segments as needed with an external device (Akai MPD18).

Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?

Thanks!!!

Dear Mr. Ginese,

You are to be commended on your first class study materials for the REAPER program. I am 67 years old and I am proud to call myself a Reaper, after a fifty year career in the recording industry. I am a former mastering engineer with employment credits from Motown in Detroit, Elektra Records, LA and numerous studios in between. I would like very much to obtain your Reaper training CD. Would you send me ordering information, so I can obtain it.

Many thanks,

Norm Elder

That was Slip editing. I have a video on that too called "split/slip editing". It uses a Xfade in and out macro and you hold ALT+Leftclick to move the media item content within the item location. Welcome to the future.. its why I started using Reaper. I can edit a drum track in about 30 minutes manually. In Pro Tools that would take someone that is an Edittor doing drum edits for 40 hrs a week.. about 2 hrs to do the same song using Pro Tools manual editing methods.

P.S: I had my Pro Tools manual editing methods down to about 2.5hrs for a 3:30 minute drum track... same song in reaper will take me 30 minutes.

I was watching your "Drum Rescue" video, and before I even got through the first minute, I noticed something about how you were splitting and moving the tracks in a group. When you split the items, and dragged to the RIGHT, it didn't leave a gap in the audio, rather, it filled in. How did you do that?! What's that called in Reaper? Back to the video...

Hi, great tutorials! Any plans to do a Reamote tutorial? Also, I came from Ableton to mix in Reaper because its a lot like Pro Tools and 64-bit. Its really a deep program also I'm discovering. I'd like to use it as my laptop DAW more I've used Ableton in some sorts in the past (I know they are different beasts but I have my ideas). One strength of Ableton is the easy Midi Mapping for controllers to manipulate certain aspects like faders, vst filters etc. Is there a good route for Midi Controller Mapping in Reaper??????)

Just got finished watching Jonny's Producing MIDI in Reaper tutorial and I have to say that I am really happy with Jonny's efforts/teachings. Not only does he show you how to use Reaper MIDI but he also shows you tips and tricks on mixing music as well.....that's a real bonus. I actually learned a lot of things concerning mixing from the different types of music genres that Jonny presents.

I think you will be happy and really surprised by everything you learn from Producing MIDI in Reaper. In fact you can get a very nice start at Reaper by also getting Jonny's other tutorial...Real World Recording with Reaper Volume 1. Both videos should get you excited about recording with Reaper in my opinion.

The ideal situation would be to track your drums to Reapers click/Metronome/MIDI beat to the BPM you want. If its already tracked and you are trying to edit it to a certain BPM you can use the beat detecting techniques... But It's not Ideal. I've had to do this for Live shows that people have gotten on and off a click.. but its a pretty big process or make it sound good. So if you have control over it I'd record WITH a click/metronome from REAPER and then edit to that grid once you are done.

With some Sampling programs they samples are in Stereo. You can use Mono if you want. It won't make much difference on Kick like you said. But if the sampler has a Stereo SNARE sound I would absolutely want it to me stereo.

I'm curious as to why you are saying to record stereo tracks for like the kick and snare which are normally mono tracks? I understand having the overheads as stereo but not sure about the kick, snare and hi hat. Thanks.

johnny,

i really dig your site, and your tutorials. keep up the good work.

i do have a question(s) - when you are slip editing drum takes, how do you know the bpm/tempo to lock to? is this predetermined during the time of performance with a metronome/click track? or do you go in after the drummer has tracked, and do the beat detective thing?

thanks!

The Track needs to be record ARMED with the correct keyboard midi input on the channel so that the channel will receive Midi signal.(little red line indicator in the VU meter.
Monitoring enabled makes it so you can hear the audio that your track is trying to make in result of a live input(Mic, MIDI, VSTi)

Hello Graham!

The DVD was sent out USPS mail within 24hrs of when you purchased it. Sometimes it can take up to 2 weeks to arrive in the UK which is rolling right around the corner. If you do not receive it in the next few days I can either send you another copy after I Verify your address again OR i can send you a Digital DL version so that you can use that till the physical copy arrives.

You will have to have your interface set to a low buffer to minimize latency.
Hi Jonny,

I was wondering if you would consider posting up a tutorial on recording Hard Rock or Metal drums using Toontracks EZDrummer and Reaper. Plus recording hard rock Rhythm and Lead guitars, bass and vocals please?

And how to mix and master Heavy Rock tracks in general?

cheers

Your best bet is probably to record the MIDI from your Triton to Reaper. And once you do that use the MIDI OUT from reaper to trigger your sounds in the triton... and then Record the audio into the session. That way the session is controlling the midi... which will be the same each time.

If you have multiple midi tracks in the Triton.. it should be easier to line them up with a "clap" note on the beginning of each track (just place a single note on 1 and 3 of the first bar) after they are recorded.

Your best bet is probably to record the MIDI from your Triton to Reaper. And once you do that use the MIDI OUT from reaper to trigger your sounds in the triton… and then Record the audio into the session.
Hi, I want to export multiple tracks from my triton to the reaper but not as midi. The problem is that I can't synchronize the individual tracks I have to do this manually and the result is a mess. Can I record multiple wav track at the same time or to synchronize them somehow?
Thanks

Hey there!

Thanks for visiting the site! I'm not sure how REAPER will run on your system except that I know it runs fine on any system i've tried it on. It has a 30 day trial so i woudl jstu a bunch of tests to see if it fits your needs in the stability area.

Does Reaper include full mastering facilities?
There are some JS plugins that are included that will help you out with this but I'm not sure if you will ge able to get the ultra pro sound with them... but indie label quality shouldnt be a problem.

How do the innumerable record labels manage to produce CD’s that sound great on any playback system?
Years of practice, experience and the right studio monitors that "translate" will. A lot of studios will have a normal set of studio monitors that are very clean and crisp(what you would expect to hear in a studio) and then another pair that are "reference monitors" which SHOULD make your mix sound "uglier" which will help you tune in the mix to sound better on all systems. The industry standard reference monitor is a Yamaha NS-10. They are out of production so you will have to find a different good Reference monitor. All that aside most of the finished Major label CD's you hear will have been recorded on very expensive gear use Mastered with an Analog chain.. then put back into a DAW to finish up. But start with practice, Experience and Studio monitors that translate well. :-)

do you believe there is any such thing as a ‘default’ EQ mastering curve, one that could be appliec to all finalised recordings?
Not 100%... there are typical EQ curves in a general sense.. but no End-All solution. Best way is to take a reference track from a Major label artist that "matches" your sound or clients sound and then do your best to match the EQ curve with instrument eqing and levels and then EQ curve.

Hello, I'm new to Reaper and have been running Adobe Audition 3 on my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5720: Intel core 2 duo processor, 2.7 gig, 800MHz, 2Gig DDR2, running MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1

My question: Is there a Reaper version that will run glitch-free on my laptop or is the latest version of Reaper 4 (32 download for Windows XP) going to be AOK? I've been very happy with Adobe Audition 3 but unfortunately a lot of users are very dissatisfied with the latest updates and it's actually less useful/desireable and Adobe don't listen to their end users, which is a very absurd policy. It means that my version of Adobe has a very limited scope of use and althought it's taught me the ropes of using a software DAW thanks to its user friendly interface, I think it might be time to move on now to a more sophisticated DAW and Reaper would be my choice, if I can get it to run on my system! Thank you so much for reading and I hope you'll have a moment to drop me a line about it! PS: Does Reaper include full mastering facilities? And another question I have is: How do the innumerable record labels manage to produce CD's that sound great on any playback system! I still don't know how to achieve that - do you believe there is any such thing as a 'default' EQ mastering curve, one that could be appliec to all finalised recordings? - Andy Martin

question: how do you disable the MIDI note playback upon note selection in the MIDI Edit window? I can't seem to find a preference or option to disable it.

You need to acquire them by finding free VSTi's or purchasing VSTi's (Virtual Instruments).

There is a great post on the forums about a bunch of free ones you should look for.

Really good video, I think this will help me a lot.
But one question:
When you went on insert virtual instrument, you had more things than me at my computer.. you clicked on Dfh Sampler, but this doesn't exist at my computer.. so how can I get instruments, like you had? and then how do I have to put them into REAPER ??

Hi Jonny, Very impressive site. Thinking of a purchase myself. I am trying to locate an engineer I lost touch with years ago. His Name is Michael Ginese. During my searches I came up with your name. I am a hasbeen musician getting into the digital world with my home studio just recently setup. About 30 years ago this guy (and his wife) helped me cut a demo in his analog studio. Let me tell you this dude was a musical genius(as I'm sure you are too),but he put a twist on my tune and re-arranged it as well. I always looked up to him and wonder if you are any relation. The cassette he gave me is still a hit with everyone who hears it .This was back in the 80s in NY.I see you are in TN. I really want to see if he ever got published and would like some tips on how he enhanced my vocals. Any relation ?? Have you heard of him?? When I left NY he had Leslie West and Felix Cavalier (rascals) recording at his farmhouse studio. Any help finding him would be greatly appreciated !! If no relation, I certainly appologize.
Regards and Thx, J. Hammer

Hmm... the bet way to do this IMO is folders.. but you coudl make sends from the "Tom" tracks to a "Master Tom" track and then disable the "Tom" tracks master send by ALT+Click'ing the IO button. This will let the send from the "Tom" track pass through to the "Master Tom" channel but not from "Tom" track to the main session Master.

Hope that helps!

Hello Jonny! I have a little "problem" and I believe you're the guy to explain it to me :)

I think there's a way where you send some tracks to another one ("kinda" like folders) but you can only hear sound from the "master" track and not the individual others.

Let's say I have 4 tom tracks (tom1, tom2 etc) and I want to process them all together. Now, I either create a folder or I send those 4 tracks to a master "Toms" track, I'm not sure. And somehow, I can have sound coming only from the master track, the individuals are kind of muted.

I'm almost certain I've seen this happening on some video, unfortunately it's been too long for me to remember where or how it's done. Can you shed some light on the matter?

Thanks a lot

Hello Jonny! I have a little “problem” and I believe you’re the guy to explain it to me

I think there’s a way where you send some tracks to another one (“kinda” like folders) but you can only hear sound from the “master” track and not the individual others.

Let’s say I have 4 tom tracks (tom1, tom2 etc) and I want to process them all together. Now, I either create a folder or I send those 4 tracks to a master “Toms” track, I’m not sure. And somehow, I can have sound coming only from the master track, the individuals are kind of muted.

OK, I've just solved the problem. I was trying all sorts of changes to the routing configuration, and the solution was in fact quite simple. I just had to ensure tracks 2, 3, etc had input monitoring turned on, and were armed for recording. I remember trying this, but doing so in the middle of trying other things with the routing. Obviously I never tried turning on the input monitoring and arming for record when the routing was how it was supposed to be.

Thanks again for your videos. They're a great resource for those new to Reaper, and I'm sure for others as well.

Cheers.

This is a very informative video. I've learned a lot from it. However, I'm having exactly the same problem as Mike. With my midi keyboard I can only play the instrument on the first channel. Yesterday and today I've posted on the Reaper forum, but so far have not found a solution. If you solved Mike's problem please let me know!

Thanks,
John

Just a question: Usage of scripts (chorderize, legato script and other) are going to be covered? There's some info at forum and places but still I don't get the idea of how they works

Hi,
This tutorial is great, and that is how I've setup Kontakt. But, I'm using an external keyboard to play the notes. I would like to just have it send out on MIDI channel 1, and have Kontakt re-channelize it to the correct MIDI channel. I have to have Kontakt track Rec-Armed (but recoridng disabled) in order to monitor the sound in Kontakt. The problem is, it doesn't matter which MIDI track or MIDI channel, I'm always hearing Channel 1 playing. For example-I have piano on MIDI channel 1, Bass on MIDI channel 2 and guitar on MIDI channel 3. They are routed like you have (except I used the "Create 16 MIDI channels" command). If I record-arm Track 2 or 3 , whcih is sending on MIDI channel 2 or 3, I'm still only hearing the piano on MIDI channel 1. Do you have any idea how to have Kontakt re-channelize incoming MIDI notes on one channel. I'm coming from the Digital Performer world, and this is very simple on that.

Hi. Is there a way to remove only the drums from a song (MP3, WAV) in Reaper? I would like to create a "drumless" version of my favorite song so that I can play along to it with my drumkit. Note that the song is (obviously) a finished song, and when I import it into Reaper I only see it as one track(i.e., there is no easy fix by simply removing the drumtrack only). Could you maybe do a Youtube tutorial? Thank you very much!

HI, OK i'm pretty sure i'm doing something really wrong...but....in the event i'm not I'll put this out there. I have a yamaha digital kb that is USB connected to my computer (64 bit Win7)...and I downloaded Reaper, already put in for the license...but when I play a key on the keyboard, it shows nothing in reaper? I have installed the drivers into windows...and reaper seas it as a midi-device portable grand...so what am I doing wrong?

Hey I am new to reaper and I was wondering how I could record sounds off my mircokorg without it acting as a midi controller?

Hello! You should have your DL email by now but for all others that might read this... All emails/snail mail orders will be sent out within 24hrs. But I usually email DL's within an hour if its between 8am-11pm EST time.

are you using a Xfade in and out macro? or just slicing? Just slicing will sound bad but the xfade in and out should sound good. Could you email me sample of the issue?

when i slip edit i find that when i have a decent change to make the cymbals get all glitchy sounding and it sounds like crap even if its not a really big adjustment i still find it to stand out way to much and it is a problem help would be great!

Good video as always. For your DVD I'd recommend doing the orchestral scoring as opposed to a rock song. Using something like SampleTank or Miroslav or a similar package to add strings and that to a song, or a full-on score would probably be really interesting to a lot of us!

I second this. This is what I want to know. And is there a way to hook up a midi keyboard to play specific loop sections, i.e. make a session and have section 1, section 2, section 3, and if we're playing a song that goes from section 1 to section 3, or we decide to play section 2 twice, I can controll that from a keyboard or MIDI pad or something?

I'm just getting into Reaper and LOVE it. Such a step up from my other DAWs. Which shall remain unnamed.

I'm still new to the whole plug-ins thing and getting them to work in Reaper. More than just, like, a reverb rack or something. I'm talking like, analog synth patches or drum machines... I'm not sure how to set those up in Reaper.

Also, I'm going to start using this live. I think a video of live applications would be sweet!

Hmm. For your setup you will want to have a record armed audio track that you are going to actually record on.. And then a "reverb" track that is record enabled(recording disabled) with the monitoring button clicked. Then put your reverb plugin on at 100% wet. I would recommend turning the Pre-Delay all the way down since your interface will already have some delay.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I'm missing something... In the option #2, when live-monitoring the Reverb "track," you hear both the reverb and the dry sound. This is the case even though "dry" is all the way down in the plug in. I would think the Reverb track should ONLY have the wet/reverb sound, not the dry.

What I'm trying to do is use a USB interface (with external mixer monitoring), play my guitar through it, but add Reverb (or other EFX) through Reaper and hear it "on top of" the dry sound. But if I just follow your instructions above, I get the repeated/delayed dry sound as well as reverb.

Sorry if I'm missing something simple (beginner).

You should probably route it the same way Except change the Record mode on the audio track to "Record Output" then you can just record in real time. I don't think it will Render on a track unless there are Midi notes being sent.

The upcoming MIDI DVD will cover creating a beat for 3 different genre's and Creating/Mixing a Hook for the song. Keep an eye out for that. I'm not going to put a full length Mixing video online for any genre... Those will be reserved for DVDs.
